The biggest difference is the spindle. Vertical means the spindle is upright and horizontal means the spindle is level. When a vertical lathe is working, the weight of the workpiece is loaded directly on the table, and the table distributes the weight to the bed.

Therefore, vertical lathe has large load carrying capacity and good rigidity, which is suitable for processing workpieces of large size, large diameter and short length, such as disc, wheel hub and gear blank. While the workpiece of horizontal lathe is clamped on the chuck, and the load is transferred to the main spindle, which is borne by the front and rear main bearings, so the carrying capacity is small and the rigidity is poor. And horizontal lathe is easy to observe and operate, suitable for processing small and medium-sized wheel disc and shaft parts.
